"A sentence so beautiful it startles me, until I remember I cannot immediately place it inside your hands."
"If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger." - Emily Brönte
A sentence so beautiful
it startles me,
until I remember
I cannot immediately place it
inside your hands.
I want to remember
all of you.
Not because I fear forgetting,
but because my memory has become
another form of affection.
I remember your eyes
like wells holding the sea.
Deep enough to reflect
both stars and storms,
yet somehow remaining
astonishingly clear.
Even sorrow,
looking backwards,
softens at the edges
when contained inside your oceans.
As though hope
had quietly been travelling
in reverse.
The soul does not grow
by guarding itself.
And should the years continue
their patient pilgrimage
I hope I never lose
this astonishment.
This soft, almost sacred disbelief
that in a world so grandly populated,
I was somehow allowed to meet a soul
whose happiness matters to me
as much as breathing.
Whose sadness echoes
inside my own.
Whose existence has become
one of the reasons I continue
to believe that beauty
is not merely something that the world contains
but something we become
when we love without reserve.
And if one day,
every poem forgotten,
every page turned to dust,
I think love will remain
as it is.
A pair of hearts,
the handholding of two souls
learning how to pronounce
the word “home”
inside one another.
I want to go home.
