Undeserved tears
"Nothing catastrophic happens. No tragedy worthy of poems."
"To heal is to touch with love that which we previously touched with fear."
— Stephen Levine
Nothing catastrophic happens.
No tragedy worthy of poems.
Sometimes I cry over things
that do not deserve tears.
I must sound exhausting.
As if awareness alone
should be enough to stop pain from hurting.
But the body does not care
whether sorrow is logical.
It would be easier, perhaps,
to love someone simpler.
Not worrying about things I should have outgrown by now,
insecurities that cling to me
like wet fabric against skin,
passing loneliness that catches strangely in the ribs.
But you listen
as if my feelings are not inconveniences
but living things deserving gentleness.
Choosing me
even when my mind becomes difficult to live inside.
You make me feel like being fragile
does not make me impossible to love.
The seawater still fills up my lungs.
You call me beautiful
so casually
it almost hurts.
As if it is obvious.
As if there has never been anything else I could possibly be.
Like my aching little human heart
is not too much trouble to hold.
Neither is yours.

You’re writing magic. Absolute magic ✨
Beautiful poem! I understand the feeling of crying over things you don’t think are worth tears. But I remember I had a professor who talked about the brokenness of the world that comes in so many forms, big and small. I think there’s a lot of truth in that and I’m glad you’re sensitive to it.
